A familiar face visited the stands to watch Italy’s Davis Cup Finals group stage tie against the Netherlands on Sunday.
Newly crowned US Open champion Jannik Sinner visited Bologna to cheer on his compatriots during their final group stage tie.
The reigning champions became the first team to qualify from Group A for the Final 8 in Malaga after Brazil defeated Belgium on Saturday. Despite the absence of the No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Italy won both ties against Belgium and Brazil, thanks to two singles victories from Matteo Berrettini.
Sinner’s last match was a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 victory in the US Open final against American Taylor Fritz. The Italian claimed his second Grand Slam trophy after lifting the Australian Open in January.
Sinner led Italy to its second Davis Cup title last season, saving three match points in his victory over Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. He then partnered Lorenzo Sonego to seal the deciding doubles and send Italy into the final against Australia.
After Matteo Arnaldi beat Alexei Popyrin to give Italy a 1-0 lead in the final, Sinner defeated Alex de Minaur to win Italy’s second Davis Cup title after winning it in 1976.
This year, Sinner has a record of 55-5, leading the circuit with six titles.
