All the ingredients that accompany the victory of Jakub Mensik this Thursday at the Miami Open presented by Itau gives him historical dyes.

The Czech of the #NextGenatp defeated Arthur Fils 7-6 (5), 6-1 in an hour and 15 minutes to become the first player born in 2005 capable of advancing to the semifinals in an ATP Masters 1000. He is the active minor player who has come so far in a tournament of this category.

“It’s amazing. I think it’s the most important result of my career, so I’m happy to have moved on from the first round,” Mesik said. “That is the key, continue concentrated for two weeks, because it is always hard … work is not done.”

First player of his generation in CF and SF of an ATP Masters 1000 (since 2000):

Mensik became the first player in his country to qualify for semifinals in Miami since Tomas Bercych did it ten years ago, when in 2015 he played the final Four in Florida against Andy Murray.

“Before each season I marked my goals that I want to achieve during the season,” added Mensik, who also surpassed Joao Fonseca to lead the PIF ATP Live Race to Jeddah, which would give his second classification to the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by Pif. “I have an incredible team. Everyone is a great job, which is always key. After great weeks or worse, we continue working hard, and is doing its fruit.”

The Czech, at 19 years and 6 months, is also the fifth youngest semifinalist in the history of the tournament, after Felix Auger-Aliassime (18 years and 7 months), Rafael Nadal (18 years and 9 months), Carlos Alcaraz (18 years and 9 months) and Sleyton Hewitt (19 years and 25 days).

To achieve this, he had to beat an opponent who, like him, pursued his first presence in an ATP Masters 1000 semifinal and become the first player of his generation (2004) to get so far in a tournament of this level. Despite the confidence of having left the main favorite Zverev in Fourth Round, Fils could not continue with his path of success in Miami.

And that managed to overcome a great start to Mesik. The Czech was advanced 4-1, but he saw how the Frenchman was cutting the distance until he placed in a 5-5, 15/40 advantage position. However, he avoided the break and the first manga decided on an adjusted tie-break (7-5). Mensik and Fils were distributed 40-41, respectively, the points at stake in the set.

Everything changed in a second set in which Mesik was superior from beginning to end. He started again with a 4-1 in his favor that was defined. With 26 winning blows – 13 of them direct lbs – according to the infosys ATP statistics he built the most important victory of his career.

But he wants more and to move forward in Miami, he will have to bend the winner of the duel that measures at the close of the day on Thursday to the head of series No. 3 Taylor Fritz and No. 29 Matteo Berrettini.

Did you know what …?

Jakub Messik, who was the only player present in the quarterfinals who did not carry the standard head label, already occupies No. 34 of the PIF Live ATP Rankings, which will guarantee next Monday the highest position of his career.
