The No. 40 in the PIF ATP Rankings resisted Matteo Berrettini in an epic match, defeating the two-time Italian champion 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 to sign off on the most special week of his career. In a very high-paced match, with an effectiveness of over 80% with first serves on both sides of the net, the British showed his ability to suffer to survive on the German grass. Draper came within two points of defeat before finding its way to the trophy.
“It’s amazing. Thank you all for the support,” Draper said. “It was a really tough match. I’m very happy to have won my first title. It means a lot to me.”
“It takes a lot of hard work. I’ve been through a lot of tough times over the last year,” Draper said. “I’ve had ups and downs, but I’m happy with the way I’ve played, it’s a reflection of the work I’ve been doing.”
Berrettini was playing his first tournament since Monte Carlo and was trying to win his third Stuttgart title.
“Congratulations to Jack. You’ve had an incredible week, an incredible match. It was very close,” said Berrettini. “This defeat is going to hurt for a while, but that’s tennis. I’ve won matches of this type and I’ve also lost them. I’m sure this guy is going to lift more trophies.”
