Cristian Garín’s recovery in the PIF ATP Rankings seems to have a positive wind, especially since the start of the European clay tour earlier this month. After being a semi-finalist a few days ago in Estoril, the Chilean has reached the quarterfinals of the BMW Open thanks to his victory this Thursday against the American Alex Michelsen.
The current world No. 106 won with sets of 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-1 against one of the best #NextGenATP of the moment (players aged 21 or younger). In this way he achieves his third classification, a few quarterfinals away in Munich, where he was champion in 2019 and quarterfinalist last year.
This victory, which supports the one he achieved in his debut against the local Dominik Koepfer, allows Garín to rise to No. 101 in the live ranking and be one more victory away from sealing his return to the Top 100, an exclusive group of which It came out in mid-March. The tennis he has shown this week in Germany suggests that he can achieve it.
This Thursday he could have stagnated with the fact of having lost the first set against Michelsen and despite having three set points in the tie-break. All the effort that had prompted him to break a 0-3 deficit with a double break and prevent the world No. 70 from closing the set at 5-4 with his serve, seemed not to have found the reward that the 27-year-old right-hander years I was looking for.
But he didn’t stay frustrated. The former world No. 17 reacted immediately by breaking in the opening game of the second set, and from there, Garín was too much in the match for Michelsen, who also lost his serve in the opening game of the third set. After winning all of his service games in the last two sets, the Chilean prevailed in two hours and 26 minutes.
Garín had not reached the quarterfinals in consecutive ATP Tour tournaments since 2023 when he reached this round in Houston and days later in Munich. She will now seek to be a semifinalist in consecutive participations for the first time since 2020 when she achieved it in Córdoba and Rio de Janeiro. His next opponent in Munich will be local Alexander Zverev, with whom he has a 1-1 record. His only victory against the German was precisely in this event in 2019.
In other results of the day, the American Taylor Fritz stopped the dream week of the Spanish Alejandro Moro by defeating him with sets of 6-3, 6-1 to become the next rival of the British Jack Draper. In addition, the Danish Holger Rune, champion of the tournament for the last two years and first seed, defeated the Colombian Daniel Galán 6-4, 6-2 and will now face Hanfmann or Huesler in the quarterfinals.
