Galán takes the first step in New York

Bolivian Murkel Dellien also advanced on Tuesday at the US Open

Almost every time he makes it to the US Open qualifying stage, Daniel Galán has at least one win in New York, and this Tuesday he has extended the trend with his victorious debut in this year’s qualifying at the American major.

The Colombian overcame a tough opening match against Italian Matteo Gigante, No. 175 in the rankings, beating him with scores of 7-6(7), 6-4 in one hour and 51 minutes. The No. 26 seed went from winning 5-2 in the first set to trailing 4/6 in the tie-break, but from this last point, the Italian committed two backhand errors and Galán took advantage of the opportunity.

Except in 2021, the current No. 129 in the PIF ATP Rankings has always won in the qualifiers of this event: two in 2018 and 2019, and three in 2022, when he even reached the third round of the main draw, beating Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, then No. 5 in the PIF ATP Rankings.

His next opponent this week will be the Polish Kamil Majchrzak, world No. 168, whom he defeated in the qualifying phase of a Challenger in Guayaquil in their only match so far.

In other results, Bolivian Murkel Dellien, world No. 176, beat Belgian Kimmer Coppejans 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 to record his first Grand Slam qualifying win. Now two games away from his debut in a main draw at this level, Dellien next faces British Billy Harris, who won 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 against Argentine Juan Manuel Cerúndolo.

Argentine Federico Gomez also won his first major qualifying match on Tuesday, defeating Dutchman Gijs Brouwer 6-4, 7-6(9). The No. 164 in the PIF ATP Rankings will now face Italian Mattia Belluci. See all the day’s US Open scores.
