Federico Agustín Gómez’s history in the Grand Slam was practically non -existent before this Roland Garros 2025. Just two experiences in the previous phase of the most recent editions of the US Open (Q2) and the Australian Open (Q1) were their background in the tournaments of this category.
But everything changed in the whipped earth of Paris for the Argentine, who not only managed to advance to the third round of the qualy, but on Tuesday he signed his first victory in a main team of Grand Slam. He did it against Aleksandar Kovacevic 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 in two hours and 47 minutes.
Gómez had started his way last week in the French capital against the local Mae Malige in the opening round of the previous one. He continued in a hard duel against #nextGenatp Spanish Martín Landaluce in three sets and stayed at the gates of qualifying against the Italian Giulio Zeppieri, who would end up being a rival of Alcaraz.
However, fate had reserved a surprise. No. 144 of the PIF ATP Rankings agreed to the main scar of Roland Garros as Lucky Loser. The opportunity reached his 28 years and was not willing to let her escape.
His debut was reserved for this Tuesday in the first turn of track 9. There he aspired to add one more victory to the only one that appeared in his ATP Tour history in Chengdu 2024 (v. A Alexandre Muller). To do this, he had to face the American Kovacevic, a rival in front of the one who did not retain any record in the Lexus ATP Head2head.
Of course, the only time the faces had been seen at the ATP Challenger Tour de Temuco (Chile) on a hard track, the balance opted on the American side after three Tie-Breaks.
On this occasion, with brick dust as a background mantle, Gomez became even larger than 1.91 m that reveals his size. The Argentine was able to rebuild an initial set against and resist a player who already knew what it was to win a Grand Slam match at the Australia Open 2024 (v. A Tabilo).
Gómez managed to add 16 direct serves, stay 77% of the points he put into play with his first service and take advantage of six of the 17 break opportunities he enjoyed. Thus he built a day he will never forget in his career as a professional tennis player.
Now his dream continues in the second round, where Cameron Norrie expects that he could with the favorite No. 11 Daniil Medvedev in an intense duel to five sets 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6, 7-5 in three hours and 53 minutes.
“There was an incredible atmosphere, I felt that I had the dynamics in my favor,” said the British in the conclusion of the meeting. “I felt a lot of energy and managed to close the game. He had some doubts, it was sincerely a game madness.”
“He is a very hard rival to beat, so I think I deserve a diploma for defeating Medvedev … I had won the last four times,” said Norrie, who added his first victory in the Lexus ATP Head2head against Medvedev.
Did you know what …?
