He was the only Argentine survivor among the nine players from his country who began their journey in the qualifying phase on Monday, August 19 in New York. And four days later, Diego Schwartzman has earned a place in the main draw in his own right.
The current No. 246 in the PIF ATP Rankings and quarter-finalist of the last Grand Slam of the season in 2017 and 2019 beat Lithuanian Vilius Gaubas 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 40 minutes in the third round of qualifying.
The former world No. 8 showed that he has been building confidence throughout the week. At the decisive moments of both sets, he was able to tip the balance in his favour. First, when he saw Gaubas recover from a 4-1 deficit, Schwartzman managed to end the three-game winning streak and score two in his favour to close out the set.
But, above all, in the second set, where the Argentine returned with 1-3 on the scoreboard. It seemed that the Lithuanian would force another set, but the ‘Peque’ rescued the distance with an immediate break. Although he could not close with 5-3 on return, with his serve he sealed his ticket to the main draw of the US Open on his third ‘match point’.
It is the third consecutive match won by the 32-year-old Argentinian in four days, after previously beating Italian Andrea Pellegrino (Q1) and his compatriot and top seed in the qualifying round, Thiago AgustÃn Tirante (Q2). All without dropping a set along the way.
Since his US Open debut in 2014, Schwartzman has not missed a single event. This will be his eleventh consecutive appearance at the American Grand Slam, the last of his career.
