Just a few days ago, before starting his adventure in the preliminary phase of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, Diego Schwartzman announced through social networks that next February 2025 he would hang up his racket in his country at the IEB+ Argentina Open.

Of course, the Argentine gave himself the right this Tuesday to continue enjoying the best tournaments on the calendar. And he did it after beating Mikhail Kukushkin in the second round of qualifying 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in two hours and 49 minutes.

The current world No. 142 was the first player to earn a ticket to the main draw in Q2, before rain forced play to be stopped.

The player born in Buenos Aires 31 years ago will seek, in this way, his first ATP Tour victory of the season (0-6) on the clay of Rome, a tournament in which he has played the main draw on nine occasions and reached to play the final in 2020 (l. with Novak Djokovic).

In addition to Schwartzman, Brazilian Thiago Monteiro also passed the qualifying phase this Tuesday. The Brazilian won 6-3, 6-4 over Frenchman Corentin Moutet in one hour and 25 minutes, while Richard Gasquet failed to make the cut against German Maximilian Marterer, falling 6-3, 6-4.

Gregoire Barrere defeated the Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alver 6-3, 7-6(7) in one hour and 47 minutes, while the local guest Francesco Passaro defeated the Croatian Duje Ajdukovic in a competitive duel 7-6(5) , 6-7(6), 7-6(3).
