Daniil Medvedev Salta, raises his arms and draws from himself a celebration of the most effusive, if not the most, of his career. His happiness is directly proportional to what he had to strive on Thursday to keep his hopes of title alive at the BNP Paribas Open, where he surpassed an inspired Arthur Fils to achieve the semifinals again in Indian Wells.
The fifth head of series, finalist in California in 2023 and 2024, seemed in real trouble when he was behind Fils, 20 years old, 2-4 in the third set. However, Medvedev again signed a new chapter of fighting in the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the year and did it once again to obtain a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7) victory at its third game point.
Under highly windy conditions in stadium 1, Medvedev produced a series of amazing passes against Fils, which regularly closed the network to press Medvedev. With nothing to separate both, the clash was decided in the Tie-Break of the decisive set. Medvedev had only won one of his last nine Tie-Breaks in the third set, but played aggressively and consisting of the tiebreaker to impose himself after two hours and 24 minutes.
Medvedev, who has a 20-7 record in the hard track tournament and aspires to raise his first trophy since 2023, when he conquered his sixth ATP Masters 1000 title in Rome. The fifth standard head is in its 15th semifinal at this level and will try to reach its 11th final when Holger Rune face Saturday.
On the other hand, earlier, Rune was no less tedious, to contain his best week of the season at the BNP Paribas Open of Indian Wells, where he surpassed the Dutch Tallon Griekspoor by 5-7, 6-0 and 6-3 to reach his first semifinal of the year and the sixth semifinal ATP Masters 1000 after two hours and five minutes.
Rune, who won the title at the ATP Masters 1000 in Paris in 2022 with only 19 years, arrived at Indian Wells far from his best level. The 21 -year -old advanced to the fourth round at the Australian Open, but had problems in February, not getting consecutive victories in the tournaments of Rotterdam, Buenos Aires and Acapulco.
After defeating the French Corentin Moutet and Ugo Humbert in their first two games in California, the twelfth head of the series reminded everyone of what is capable of a great victory against Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Now. Rune improved throughout his encounter with Griekspoor, breaking the out of the Dutchman six times, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to improve 1-2 in the Lexus ATP Head2head series of both and there was a closer step in search of his fifth title in the circuit.
