Francisco Comesaña smiles as he stops, takes dozens of photos, and promises to go eat a barbecue with his family before continuing to the next ATP Challenger Tour stop on his competitive agenda.

The 24-year-old Argentine gave himself a well-deserved title this Sunday at the YPF Challenger in Buenos Aires. The Argentine, who reached the third round of Wimbledon and the US Open this season, won in a tight 1-6, 7-6 (9-7) and 6-4, in two hours and 46 minutes against Federico Coria, after saving two match points in the second set.

Thus, Comesaña signed his second conquest on the ATP Challenger Tour, and the sixth of his career, after the title in Oeiras and as No. 94 he managed to return to the Top 1000 of the PIF ATP Rankings this Monday.

“I am very happy. I had to give myself this reward of fighting until the last ball after being two match points down. The game was difficult. I was very nervous, I didn’t have the best feelings. It was believing in myself a little. I feel that this gift is deserved after fighting all week,” Comesaña highlighted after his victory.

“Ever since I found out that the final of the tournament was going to be on my birthday, I was excited about playing in a final, I had never experienced anything like this. All the matches in the tournament were very hard and luckily I was able to give myself this little gift after so much suffering,” said the man from Mar del Plata, who beat Gonzalo Bueno, Dmitry Popko, Juan Pablo Varillas, Hugo Dellien and Coria, on the way to the title.

Comesaña’s title was No. 423 in the history of the ATP Challenger Tour, and the fourth Argentine title in a row in Buenos Aires, after Mariano Navone, Juan Manuel Cerúndolo (2022) and Sebastián Báez (2021. “Now I feel more mature, more player, I look back, I look at myself now and I feel that I made a big change from the person I am… I still have a long way to go, but I feel different,” added Comesaña, coach for Sebastián Gutierrez.

“I don’t set any goals other than going week by week and so that I can continue enjoying the journey. I want to be able to make the jump to the ATP Circuit soon but I don’t have to rush,” he added.

However, Comesaña will have little time to savor his success, and this week he will compete, as second seed, in the Villa María Challenger, a category 100 event.
