Cameron Norrie wants to end the season with a strong week. The British climbed this Wednesday to the quarterfinals of the Moselle Open, where he faces a wonderful challenge on an indoor court. The chance to compete for your first ATP Tour trophy indoora real motivation before closing the year, drives the hits of one of the most experienced players in the field.
The No. 57 in the PIF ATP Rankings had to overcome a trial by fire, resisting French #NextGenATP Luca van Assche, one of the most celebrated local figures in the tournament, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. At just 20 years old, the Frenchman was a tough obstacle for the British, forced to push himself for three races on the way to victory.
At 29 years old, Norrie aspires to recover the level that took him to the first line of the circuit. The British, former world No. 8 with an ATP Masters 1000 title on his record, landed in Metz with a record of 17-17 in the 2024 season and the semifinals of the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro as the most powerful result of the year.
In a field full of new candidates, Norrie will try to impose his experiences to get closer to the fight for the trophy. The Briton will play the quarterfinals against the Belgian Zizou Bergs, who survived 6-4, 7-5 against the collection of drop shots put up by the Frenchman Hugo Gaston.
For his part, Benjamin Bonzi signed one of the biggest victories of his career, beating second seed Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. The Frenchman, who completed the feat of the week, will face his compatriot Quentin Halys in the next round, winner 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 over Pierre-Hugues Herbert in two hours and 10 minutes of play.
Ruud heads to Turin to compete in the Nitto ATP Finals for the third time in his career. The Norwegian, runner-up of the tournament in the 2022 edition, will find out his path in the group stage at the Inalpi Arena this Thursday.
Did you know that…?
Cameron Norrie aims to become the first British champion in the history of the Moselle Open. Since his introduction to the ATP Tour calendar in the 2003 season, former world No. 1 Andy Murray has been the only compatriot capable of challenging for the title under French cover. The one from Dunblane was defeated by the Spanish Tommy Robredo in the 2007 final.
