The eternal city crowned a perpetual player.

Carlos Alcaraz made history this Sunday by conquering the internali bnl d’Italia, achieving the seventh Atp Masters 1000 trophy of a collection built at the rhythm of vertigo. With just 21 years, the Spanish placed in La Vitrina the 19th title of his career in one of the most emblematic scenarios of the ATP Tour, turning the Italic forum into one more piece of his legacy. If the beaten earth is a special prestige terrain, the Murcia consolidated its status as a great dominator of the moment.

No. 3 of the PIF ATP Rankings had to unlock an impossible aroma match, exceeding 7-6 (5), 6-1 to the great local idol Jannik Sinner, undefeated in this season and mounted on a streak of 26 consecutive wins. With a winning character before its maximum rival, Alcaraz signed one of the most special triumphs of the season, a level test that came at the most important moment of all on whipped land: days before trying to protect his throne in Roland Garros.

“I am very happy to win my first title in Rome, I hope it’s not the last,” Alcaraz said. “The first thing I mean is that I’m glad to see Jannik back to high level. Surely it has not been easy to return after three months and reach the final of a 1000 Masters in his first tournament. It is something immense and I must congratulate him.”

“I am proud of myself, for the way I have mentally faced the game. At the tactical level, I think I did it quite well from the first point. It has not been a roller coaster. I have maintained a good level throughout the game, so a proud storing for everything done today,” said Alcaraz, who extended his advantage in the Lexus ATP Head2head over the Italian.

Above all, Alcaraz made its way to the title with a feeling of loneliness in clay.

“SINNER! SINNER! SINNER!” He bramed the stands on each change on the side, encouraging the maximum local idol in search of a historical deed. That the No. 1 of the world would be covered in each blow, it was clear from the beginning, as had happened in any tournament match. If a tennis stadium can transmit strength, turn the tennis player’s nerves into an extra effort, the CentralE field became an absolute boiler under the sun.

The passion of the Italian fans became feeling at a key moment of the first set. There, with hot legs and accelerated heart, Sinner lifted the first broken ball in an always matched fight. A hard first service on Alcaraz’s body, which failed to put the ball on the track, served to save the situation, reach 3-2 on the scoreboard and unleash the excitement in the stand.

That moment of tension gave way to a battle without truce, with the power of Alcaraz and the mental strength of Sinner as main ingredients. The right of the Spanish tried to mark the pattern in the game, but his blows always found an answer on the legs of the Italian, freed from the inconvenience that struggled their performance in the semifinals. The two most imposing players of the moment made a reality clear: their styles always guarantee electrical matches regardless of the surface.

In a first part -free part, Alcaraz also crossed a cross via in his hands. The Murcian had to lift two set balls before reaching the tiebreaker, surviving a critical situation with 5-6 15/40 that resolved with variety in his service. Then, in a sudden death with a gigantic weight in the mental, where he caught three impeccable points, he managed to resist the environment to pilot the score.

The effort had an immediate effect on the dynamics of the party, open as a zipper from that moment. Aware of the work to be completed, Alcaraz clenched his teeth until he snatches his first two service shifts from the second set. A 5-0 advantage silenced a stand until then intense, stunned by perseverance without exception of the current Roland Garros champion.

The Murcian was not allowed any loophole in his concentration, focused on the point of point to the recipe marked by Juan Carlos Ferrero from the bench. If Alcaraz was the last player capable of beating Sinner, unattainable his rivals from the Beijing final last September, this Sunday stressed evidence: when the competition demands an extra, none like him to endure his gaze before the Italian.

Alcaraz happened on the Roman throne to German Alexander Zverev, which he will exceed Monday to return to No. 2 of the PIF ATP Rankings. The Spanish, the first player capable of winning three ATP Tour titles this season (Róterdam, Montecarlo, Rome) is also consolidated as No. 1 of the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin.

“All eyes are now put in Paris, in Roland Garros,” Alcaraz said. “Defeat Sinner, win Rome, … Both things together give me great confidence before going to Paris. I always say that the finals are not to play them, but to win them. I repeat that motto whenever I play a final.”

After spending three months out of competition, Sinner signed a star tournament to become the third Italian player capable of reaching the individual final of Rome (Panatta, Zugarelli). The next tournament in the Calendar of No. 1 World Cup will be Roland Garros, where it will depart as the first series in search of its fourth Grand Slam crown.

Did you know what …?
Carlos Alcaraz has become the fifth player capable of winning three different ATP Masters Tournaments on beaten land since the creation of the category in 1990. The Spanish, champion on the tracks of Madrid, Montecarlo and Rome, follows the trail of figures such as Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Gustavo Kuerten and Marcelo Ríos.
