If Facundo Bagnis was told at the beginning of the season that in 2024 he could reach an ATP Tour definition and, in addition, continue meeting objectives on the Tour, the Argentine would hardly have imagined it.

However, at 34 years old, No. 136 in the PIF ATP Rankings and finalist at the Córdoba Open at the beginning of the year, he now had the great pleasure of playing the main draw of the Mutua Madrid Open for the first time, after passing the previous one, and this Wednesday he signed an outstanding victory against the American Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6 (5), in one hour and 52 minutes of play.

In fact, in the eighth main draw of ATP Masters 1000 for the player born in Rosario but raised in Armstrong, Santa Fe, Bagnis was able to achieve his fourth victory in the main draw of this level of tournaments.

The left-hander became strong in the exchanges from the base and, varying the heights, caused multiple mistakes from Nakashima, who was not used to the surface. However, the development of the match remained even at all times.

A break in the sixth game was enough to take the first set 6-3, after 53 minutes of play. The tone of parity was maintained in the second set in which Bagnis even saved a set point by serving 4-5 in the second set, before stretching the definition to a tie-break.

Meanwhile, Bagnis earned the prize of being the first rival of Andrey Rublev, the No. 7 seed, who leads the Lexus ATP Head2Head against the Argentine 1-0 after beating him in Rome four seasons ago. For the Argentine it will also be his sixth match against a Top10 rival and he will be looking for his first victory.
