Rafael Nadal is hoping to return to competition next week at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, where he practiced on Wednesday.
The Spaniard, twelve-time champion of the competition, wrote on social networks that he wants to play the ATP 500, which would be only his second tournament of the year.
Hello from Barcelona 👋🏻
First training session… with the hope of being here these days before the start of the tournament.
I’m here to see how it goes… with the desire to try to play. I’ll tell you about it.
It’s important to say that I don’t want to confirm that I will play, I hope so.
We’ll see 🤞🏻 pic.twitter.com/N9cVDbO3N1— Rafa Nadal (@RafaelNadal) April 10, 2024
Nadal has a record of 66-4 in Barcelona, where the stadium court is named after him. The local favorite lifted the trophy for the first time in 2005 and most recently in 2021.
The former 2024 PIF ATP Rankings No. 1’s only tournament came in January at the ATP 250 in Brisbane, where he reached the quarterfinals.

On clay, for his part, Rafa has not competed since Roland Garros 2022, when he was champion of the edition by beating Novak Djokovic in the final. His adaptation to this surface began in the middle of last month.
In practice this Wednesday he trained with the Spanish David Jordà, No. 298 in the PIF ATP Rankings and player of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1989. The 29-year-old tennis player has just achieved his first victory on the ATP Tour last week.
