Jannik Sinner made history on June 10, 2024 by becoming the first Italian capable of reaching No. 1 of the PIF ATP Rankings, enjoying the reward of a sensational trip initiated in August 2023.
Under the tutelage of coach Simone Vagnozzi, Sinner arrived at the ATP Masters 1000 of Toronto in August 2023 being Top 10 and champion of seven ATP Tour titles. With an obvious potential, the success of the Italian in Canada marked the beginning of his escalation until No. 1.
After winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Toronto, Sinner lifted trophies in Beijing and Vienna before reaching the final match in the Nitto ATP Finals of Turin, where he defeated the then No. 1 World Cup Novak Djokovic in the group stage.
Upon arriving at the Australian Open in 2024, the expectation was huge around Sinner after having guided Italy to the Davis Cup title in November. Sinner surpassed Djokovic in Melbourne’s semifinals and then, after giving the first two sleeves, trace a spectacular final against Daniil Medvedev. The Italian did not panic, he trusted his game and turned the game to raise his first Grand Slam title.
Leaving Melbourne as No. 4 World Cup, Sinner gave continuity to the Australian title by winning Rotterdam ATP 500. His second ATP Masters 1000 trophy arrived in Miami, leaving Sinner as No. 2 of the PIF ATP Rankings in April. At that time, the question was not if it would be able to do it but when it would be able to ascend to No. 1.
The answer? About Roland Garros’s clay in June. His presence in the semifinals and a fall in the quarterfinals of Djokovic turned the Italian into the 29th player capable of assuming gallons of No. 1 World Cup.
The adversity, in the form of defeats in the final rounds of Grand Slam, has generated the best version of Sinner. In the same way that Big Three members were forced to improve each other, figures such as Djokovic or Alcaraz have caused the same in Italian. Now, with 53 consecutive weeks at the top, the effort will be immense to separate him from the throne. SINNER holds an advantage of 2,030 points over Alcaraz, executioner of the Italian this Sunday in the longest Roland Garros Roland Garros final.
As in force champion, Alcaraz will put another 2,000 points in Wimbledon at stake, probably leaving Sinner without competition in No. 1 to the American hard track tour.
