Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos maintain an impeccable chemistry in the Magic Fund, one of the enclaves where the love multiplies around it. Spanish and Argentine climbed this Friday until their 22nd final as a couple, the second in the clay of the mutual Madrid Open, where they already raised the cup in the 2021 season. With the aim of endorsing their talent at the top of the male doubles, the Spanish capital will be an ideal scenario to achieve it.
The fifth series heads exceeded a match of minimal margins to enter the fight for the title, defeating 7-6 (6), 7-5 to the Germans Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in a Arantxa Sánchez stadium full of festive atmosphere. One of the most intense duels of the tournament served to test the Hispanic couple, already located at the gates of one of the most special titles of their careers.
Granollers and Zeballos needed to squeeze their intense mental strength until the outcome, an absolute whipped earth test. The Germans, twice Roland Garros champions, clung to the track with an extreme force in an obvious owner duel. Spanish and Argentine saved two set points at the tiebreaker of the first manga and saw a 5-2 disappear in the second partial. Limit moments that assumed coldly to find the way to victory.
Now, the decisive moment will occur to the best possible couple. Granollers and Zeballos will look for the cup against the first serial heads Marcelo Arévalo and Mate Pavic, winners this Friday against Americans Christian Harrison and Evan King 6-7 (8), 7-5, 10-6.
The Hispanic couple has returned to the Magic Fund in 2025 with the mission of getting a good taste. Last year they lived a very special moment, ensuring promotion to No. 1 of the PIF ATP Double Rankings for the first time after reaching the semifinals at the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid.
Spanish and Argentine are one of the most common couples in the locker room. Competing hand in hand for more than five years, with a constant presence in the largest events of the calendar, Marcel and Horacio have managed to knead a collection of 11 doubles crowns as a couple, including seven ATP Masters 1000 trophies. No other active couple holds such a wide collection in tournaments of the golden category of the ATP Tour.
In one of the most demanding tournaments of the calendar, Granollers and Zeballos seek to become the fourth couple capable of lifting multiple double crowns in the history of Mutua Madrid Open. Spanish and Argentine want to follow the example left by Daniel Nestor/Mark Knowles (2002, 2004), Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan (2006-07, 2010-11, 2013) and Jean-Julien Rojer/Horia Tecau (2016, 2019).
Did you know that …?
Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos have a balance of 7-1 in the end of the ATP Masters 1000 category as a couple. Spanish and Argentine, who crowned events in Canada (2), Rome, Madrid (2), Cincinnati and Shanghai, only delivered the decisive party played at Indian Wells 2024.
