Is it possible to get a better birthday gift? Probably no. Alexander Zverev, who turned 28 this Sunday, conquered the title at the BMW Open By Bitpanda as a local favorite in the German beaten land.

Racked by a public delivered to his idol, No. 3 of the PIF ATP Rankings defeated Ben Shelton in Munich 6-2, 6-4, in an hour and eleven minutes, conquering his third crown in the tournament (2017-18, 2025). In this way, he matched his compatriot Philipp Kohlschreiber with three titles (2007, 2012, 2016).

“It’s very special, I love winning tournaments in Germany,” Zverev acknowledged, after achieving his sixth title at home. “It’s probably the most special I can do. It is definitely a great birthday gift.”

This Zverev triplet is the first one that the German achieves in the same tournament, raising up to 24 the total trophies figure in its showcase. Six of them, of ATP 500 category.

Munich’s ATP 500 had its dream end. Not only because the local favorite was willing to fight for the trophy, but because it brought together the two main serial heads. It is the fourth time in the history of the tournament that the best of the poster are cited in the last round and first since No. 2 Mikhail Yuzhny defeated No. 1 Marin Cilic in 2010.

On this occasion, Zverev expanded the Lexus ATP Head2head 2-0 in his favor against Shelton. And as it had happened the first time the faces had been seen in the ATP Masters 1000 in Cincinnati last year, the balance opted on the German side.

The first set of the world was impeccable. He opened the encounter with one of the two breaks he needed to leave him from his side by 6-2, accompanied by 84% of points won with the first service and the Blank options box granted blank, according to Infosys ATP statistics.

The decoration did not change in the second partial. Once again, the German started with a break that allowed him to win eight of the first ten games of the game 6-2, 2-0. The main favorite knew how to keep the advantage to end up sealing his victory No. 20 in the German tournament.

“I knew I had to play my best tennis today, Ben had been playing very well this week,” the German added. “The conditions fit him very well, it’s very hot and it’s very fast. I also do well, to be fair. I am enjoying my birthday so far.”

Zverev thus got his first 2025 title to take the best possible birthday gift in Munich.
