Albert Ramos-Viñolas signed on Monday an emotional farewell at Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, closing a very special relationship with the Count Trophy of Godó. Surrounded by family and friends, the Catalan last participated in his career in the ATP 500 of the Ciudad Condal, one of the most personal meaning of his career. Mataró’s, which weeks ago announced the decision to face his professional career in 2025, was last addressed to home fans.
With the pundonor who has shown throughout his career, the Barcelona squeezed his teeth against Holger Rune, one of the main throne candidates on the beaten earth. The Danish won 7-5, 6-4 on the Rafael Nadal track, adorned to fire one of the most beloved players for the Catalan fans.
At 37, Ramos-Viñolas took the microphone to go to the gathered public in his last battle, explaining the decision to put the end point to his professional career this season.
“My idea was to continue playing, I didn’t think about retiring if I recovered the level,” said Barcelona, tanned after about two decades of professionalism at ATP Tour. “After a very hard preseason, in the first tournament in South America I had an injury, a fiber break, which later resulted in pubis osteopathy. There I realized that the years have passed,” he said.
Since he will play the previous phase in the 2007 season, being just a teenager in search of sleep at ATP Tour, Ramos-Viñolas has been one of the most common faces in Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. The Catalan has been present in the last 17 editions of the ATP 500 held in the city, with the quarterfinals of 2013 and 2017 as the most prominent results before his hobby.
Now, accumulated efforts force him to make a decision as thoughtful as it is difficult, to depart from the sport that has made him one of the most emblematic figures of the Navy in recent years.
“To have the level I need to train very strong, I am not a player who has a big serve and I need to be fit and when I prepare the maximum they leave pain, when I have a hard game it is difficult for me So that this was my last game because it is a decision that after a lifetime playing tennis is a decision that must mature a little.
The Spanish, champion of four ATP Tour titles, became one of the most respected players on beaten land in recent years. Old fourthistist of Roland Garros and runner -up of the ATP Masters 1000 of Montecarlo, accumulated 200 individual victories on the surface, being one of the three active players capable signing that milestone.
This Monday, surrounded by a felt tournament for years, the most emotional farewell took the Ramos-Viñolas seal.
