In his first final in an ATP Masters 1000 tournament this Sunday at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, Lorenzo Musetti had put Carlos Alcaraz against the strings before physical problems prevented him from competing normally in the third set.
After the defeat, the Italian talked about this frustrating end of a tournament that, after all, was very positive.
“I felt the ball very well today. I was very clear about what I had to do. But I physically had problems,” said Musetti, who does not yet know exactly the scope of the injury. “From the beginning, I tried to compensate a little with the freedom to play.”
“In the end, physical problems, fatigue and stress accumulated in recent days and games came out. So unfortunately I could not finish the game. I mean, I couldn’t fight until the end,” Musetti added.
Relive the highlight of the Montecarlo final:
Musetti, who ended up yielding 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 against Alcaraz, will rise on Monday to the highest position of his career as No. 11 of the PIF ATP Rankings, after defeating Top 10 stars as Tsistipas Stefanos and Alex de Miñaur on his way to the final. At 23, he was very satisfied with his level in the Principality.
“I take many positive things. I have achieved some of my goals,” Musetti said. “It is clear that we are already focused on other goals and trying to be ambitious to motivate me, because I have not yet reached the top 10. That was probably the main objective right now this season. But we are close enough to continue fighting and dreaming.”
Musetti paid to a great level on land this week, although he had already demonstrated his pedigree on the surface. Without going any further, the bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games, in addition to beating Novak Djokovic in Montecarlo 2023 and lifting the title in the ATP 500 of Hamburg in 2022.
Now, the Italian is wanting to face the rest of the European turn on brick dust.
“The earth is my favorite surface. It is my natural habitat. This week gave me the confidence of being more ambitious even in larger tournaments like this or Roland Garros,” Musetti warned. “It is a great moment of the season. It is very important, I do not have many points to defend, so I hope to be prepared to do great things. I feel that I have the level to be high on the ground.”
