Carlos Alcaraz lost in semifinals in Indian Wells and suffered a surprising elimination in the debut in Miami. Despite that, the 21-year-old Spanish feels calm with his level before debuting on the European dirt of whipped land at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.
“I am very happy with my game,” Alcaraz said Sunday in Montecarlo. “Since the start of the year I have played an excellent tennis. Tennis is not just about hitting the ball. It’s much more than that. It is a mentality, physicist.”
“I am very happy with my game. If I do not win, it doesn’t matter if I play well or bad. People do not think of the rival, just think of me. If I lose, they say that something is happening. It does not seem fair. I’m simply happy and ready to play well on beaten land.”
Although it is still early in the season, Alcaraz occupies the fifth place in the race to Turin and holds a 15-4 record according to the Infosys ATP victories/defeats. Its percentage of victories of 78.9 is the second best of the ATP Tour this season among all players with at least 10 games played in the circuit, only surpassed by Jack Draper (81.3%).
In addition, Alcaraz got his first season title in Róterdam in February and also advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australia and Doha Open. The Murcian believes that not having more titles also lies in the current high level in the circuit.
“Many people could have said that I should have played better tennis or won more tournaments, but I don’t think it’s fair,” Alcaraz said. “I think the picture of each tournament is very open and many players are playing good tennis and deserve to be there.”
“There are many players who play well on beaten land and on all surfaces. I think the whipped earth season will be interesting. I see many players capable of doing great things in whipped land.”
Alcaraz is the second standard head in Montecarlo, where he will be making his second appearance. The Spanish was lost the last two editions due to injury. In addition, he fell into his first game against Sebastian Korda three years ago.
“I am very happy to be here,” said Alcaraz. “It’s a tournament that I have only played once. I want to come and play big. I really want to train here and prepare for my first game.”
Alcaraz, eight times champion of the circuit in whipped land, will begin his tournament against the Italian guest Fabio Fognini, former champion of the tournament, or Francisco Cerúndo.
