Munar recovers joy on the land of Marrakech

The Spaniard broke a streak of three consecutive losses

The return of the ATP Tour calendar to clay is always synonymous with good news for Spanish players. And Jaume Munar is one of those who has managed to get the most out of tournaments on this surface so far this season.

So much so that the No. 73 in the PIF ATP Rankings added this Monday at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech a new victory in 2024, after defeating #NextGenATP Luca Van Assche 7-6(3), 6-2 in one hour and 49 minutes.

The Spaniard appeared on the Moroccan clay, after a blank passage through the American hard court tour of the ATP Masters 1000 in Indian Wells and Miami. But in this ATP 250 he recovered the same harmony in his game that allowed him a few weeks before to shine in South America.

And Munar reached the quarterfinals in Córdoba (l. to Facundo Bagnis) and Santiago (l. to Sebastián Báez) on a tour in which he finished with a 5-3 record in ATP Tour main draw matches.

In his debut in Marrakech he signed eight aces and converted four of the seven break opportunities he had to move forward in the tournament. In the second round he will face the winner of the clash that brings together the No. 6 seed Alexander Shevchenko and the Italian Matteo Berrettini, who plays with a protected ranking.

Furthermore, the players from the previous round already know who they will play against in the first round. Roberto Carballés Baena, the one in charge of defending the crown, will have Matteo Gigante as his rival. The Italian won a tight duel against Rudolf Molleker 7-6(5), 0-6, 7-6(4) in two hours and 16 minutes.

Meanwhile, Argentine Mariano Navone did not suffer from a lack of rhythm after stopping for almost a month and decisively beat Tunisian Aziz Dougaz 6-3, 6-2 in the first round. In his fourth participation at the highest level, first entering directly, the finalist in Rio continued his good level shown in 2024 and will now face the winner of the Spanish Albert Ramos-Viñolas and the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, who will meet this Tuesday at the third turn of the central court.

For his part, No. 5 seed Facundo Díaz Acosta awaits Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, who beat Gregoire Barrere 7-6(6), 7-6(5). Meanwhile David Goffin, who beat Benjamin Hassan 2-6, 7-6(8), 6-3, will play Arthur Rinderknech and Fabio Fognini, who beat Lucas Miedler 3-6, 6-3, 6 -2, against Hugo Gaston.
