Nothing like winning at home. And Arthur Cazaux can attest, after achieving a victory on Monday night to start his campaign at the Open Occitanie de Montpellier.
The 22-year-old tennis player won former No. 3 of the world Stan Wawrinka 6-4 and 6-3 in the ATP 250 tournament on a hard track. For Cazuax, local player of Montpellier, however, he had his bitter side: he will form a couple tomorrow with Wawrinka on the double track. Despite this special feeling, the Frenchman could show and overcome the 39 -year -old player in 88 minutes to add his third victory in the circuit at home.
“It has been a great honor for me to share the track with him today,” said Cazaux referring to Wawrinka, winner of three majors. “I saw him on television when he was very young, when he won three Grand Slams. It has been an honor, but it has not been easy for me, because before the tournament we talked about playing doubles and we trained two days together.”
“I am happy with my victory today. I had to concentrate because he played better on the second set. He has got better, so it has not been easy for me to press him in his service games. I am very happy with the victory because I played at a level Pretty good throughout the game, “said Cazaux, who showed great solidity in the serve, a blow with which he won 85% (29/34) of the points after his first serve, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
Now. Cazaux will have the opportunity to take revenge when he faces the second standard head, Felix Auger-Aliassime, in the second round. The Frenchman, which goes 0-2 in his series Lexus ATP Head2head, fell into the same phase against Auger-Aliassime in last year’s edition of the tournament.
“It will be the revenge of the revenge, because I also played against him three weeks ago,” said Cazaux with a smile. “I know Felix very well, it will be a great fight as usual. So I am very happy to be in the second round and play against him with my audience.”
Meanwhile, Buyunchaakete showed few nerves in his first campaign at the ATP Tour as series head. No. 71 of the PIF ATP Rankings, eighth head of Montpellier, won Daniel Altmaier 7-6 (1) and 6-3 in an hour and 43 minutes.
Buyunchaakete saved two break points in the seventh game before imposing his domain in the Tie-Break. The Chinese star maintained the impulse in the second set, where he broke twice before sealing his first victory of the season in the circuit. Buyunchaakete will face Borna Coric or Constant Lestienne in the second round.
