The joys do not stop for the Salvadoran Marcelo Arévalo and the Croatian Mate Pavic. One day after receiving the trophy that accredits them as the year-end No. 1 in doubles, an honor presented by PIF, they sealed their qualification to the semifinals of the Nitto ATP Finals in their debut as a team in the tournament.
Their advance was sealed thanks to a 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 victory against the Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori to leave the Lexus ATP HeadToHead between both teams at 4-0, and to finish as runners-up in the group Bob Bryan behind the first, the Germans Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz.
Bolelli/Vavassori, another debutant team in the tournament, went from 5-0 in the second set to 5-3, 40/40 with serve, and still sent the duel to a super tie-break that excited the local public with another Italian qualification to the semi-finals after Jannik Sinner’s on Thursday.
However, the No. 1s won in one hour and 17 minutes to stay alive in Turin. Arévalo will play in the semifinals of this event for the first time after remaining in the group stage in 2022. Pavic, for his part, returns to this instance in an event in which his best result was the final in 2022.
This classification of the Salvadoran and the Croatian, who are playing their first year together, rewards their great season in which they now have 46 matches won and four titles, including one at the Grand Slam level and another at the Masters 1000 level.
Now they are still in the race for a title in a different category. To do so, they will have to beat the Finnish Henri Heliovaara and the British Henry Patten in the semifinals on Saturday, who went through the group stage undefeated and with whom they have a 1-1 record.
