Jack Draper has plans for greatness on the circuit. The Briton won the biggest ATP Tour title of his career this Sunday at the Erste Bank Open, imposing an imposing force on the Vienna indoor court. At just 22 years old, and with a left-footed game that makes its way into the locker room, he continues to take notable steps towards an increasingly consolidated professional maturity.
The No. 18 in the PIF ATP Rankings completed his display of power in Austria, defeating Karen Khachanov 6-4, 7-5 in an uncertain final until the outcome. Faced with the possibility of adding the biggest achievement of his career, Draper had to contain his adrenaline to reach the cup. In a match that seemed to be decided at 4-0 in the second set, Khachanov linked five consecutive games before the Briton sealed the final.
“I was playing really well and all of a sudden the momentum changed,” said Draper, who is 37-21 on the season. “Honestly, I haven’t felt nervous. I’ve missed some balls and made bad decisions. Also, Karen has raised her level. It’s a demonstration of what a good player she is, a fighter who is in top shape.”
“Although everything has been tight, I have remained solid and with a good mental attitude. Luckily, I have managed to get out of it. It has been a relief. It is my first ATP 500 and the feeling is incredible. I am immensely happy, proud of myself myself and my team. We live for moments like this, we are going to try to enjoy it.”

Draper has completed a week of great inspiration on the Vienna deck, where he has climbed to the cup, losing only one round in the entire tournament. The Briton, who inaugurated his ATP Tour record on the grass of Stuttgart this year, improves his record in finals to 2-2 and secures the highest position of his career as No. 15 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
“I would like to congratulate Jack and his team on this well-deserved victory,” said Khachanov. “You’ve been brave all week. You’re going up this season and I wish you a lot of success in the future. I hope we share the court again and get revenge for this loss.”
“When you reach the final, you think about winning it. I can’t complain, the last two weeks have been fantastic. After winning last week and reaching the final in Vienna for the first time, I must thank my team. I have been close to come back, that shows that you need to stay strong, be positive and fight. Here is a great example of that in Thomas. [Muster].
With this result, Khachanov saw his streak of another consecutive victory on the circuit interrupted. After winning the ATP 250 in Almaty, he has managed to be one step away from his second consecutive cup in Vienna. Karen will compete next week at the Rolex Paris Masters, where she won the biggest trophy of her career in the 2018 season.
Did you know that…?
Jack Draper has become the first player to win the Erste Bank Open in his first participation since Andy Murray achieved the milestone in the 2014 season.
