Jannik Sinner has secured the ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF (No. 1 at the end of the year), becoming the first Italian to do so, after reaching the semi-finals at the Rolex Shanghai Masters this Saturday.

Victories in Melbourne and New York have allowed Sinner to become the third man in the Open Era to lift his first two Grand Slams in the same season. He was the first to achieve this since Guillermo Vilas did it in 1977.

Sinner started the season in great form, after reaching the final at the Nitto ATP Finals 2023 and leading Italy to glory in the Davis Cup. At the beginning of 2024, as world No. 4, he recovered from two sets down against Daniil Medvedev in the final at Melbourne Park to be the second Italian to win a Grand Slam in the Open Era, after Adriano Panatta at Roland Garros 1976.

Sinner won its first 16 games of the year and maintains a record this season of 64-6. At 23 years old, he has equaled the personal best record of victories in the same year that he set last year (64-15), which in turn was the record for the most victories in the men’s team by a player from his country in a same season in the Open Era.

The player born in San Cándido started the year with an ATP Masters 1000 in his showcase and already has two more, after winning in Miami and Cincinnati. He has also been crowned in the ATP 500 in Rotterdam and Halle.

By winning his second Grand Slam at the US Open, Sinner became one of four players to have won the Australian Open and the US Open on hard courts in the same season. The other three who achieved it were Djokovic, Roger Federer and Mats Wilander.

Sinner has held onto the world No. 1 for 17 weeks and will continue to add to his tally. He is currently the 18th longest player at the top of men’s tennis among the 29 players who have reached No. 1.

Andrea Gaudenzi, president of the ATP, points out that “finishing the season as the best player in the world is the great challenge of tennis. Jannik’s determination and great work ethic have earned him a place in history as the first Italian to achieve this distinction. At 23 years old, he should be immensely proud of everything he has achieved. We are looking forward to seeing how his career continues.”
