The capacity for suffering is a requirement that Jannik Sinner embraces at the top of the circuit. The Italian climbed this Sunday to the round of 16 of the Rolex Shanghai Masters with a total effort, overcoming an open battle against Tomás Martín Etcheverry 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2. If the first seed was looking for a test of resistance, the match gave him a round opportunity in his hands.

The first seed needed to squeeze his psychological strength, turning around a match where obstacles did not keep him from the objective. Faced with an opponent with iron blows and courage to take the middle court, Sinner remained cool until he found his way. The Italian, who let two set points escape before surrendering the first set, imposed his solidity to open the necessary gaps towards victory.

“It was a difficult match, physically and mentally. I am very happy to have overcome it,” said Sinner, who is seeking his seventh title of 2024 in Shanghai. “I lost a pretty tough set. I had my chances, but these things can happen.”

“Sometimes you have to wait until you find your moment and I have achieved that. The key today was to try to stay mentally calm.”

With a day of rest ahead, Sinner will have to wait until he meets his opponent in the round of 16 of the tournament. The Italian will next meet the winner of the clash between No. 14 seed Ben Shelton and Spaniard Roberto Carballés Baena.

Furthermore, the victory allows Sinner to extend an imperial composure in matches where he appears as the outstanding favorite. The Italian, accustomed to resisting pressure at just 23 years old, has accumulated a record of 43-0 against players who do not belong to the Top 20 in the 2024 season, underlining an impeccable line of authority against his rivals.

Sinner maintains his chances of finishing the season as ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF for the first time in his career. The one from San Candido holds No. 1 in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, with an advantage of 2,870 points over the second position occupied by the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz. Both could cross paths this week in the Shanghai semifinals, a stage of great importance for the year’s classification.

Did you know that…?
Jannik Sinner is the only tennis player to have won multiple ATP Masters 1000 titles in the 2024 season. The Italian, champion on the courts of Miami and Cincinnati, will try to confirm in Shanghai his status as the great leader of the year in the golden category of the ATP Tour.
