Although he has achieved notable success in 2024, the best year of his career, Jannik Sinner believes he can still achieve more in the rest of the season, and hopes to demonstrate it starting this week at the China Open in Beijing, where he will play his first tournament since who won his second Grand Slam title at the US Open.
“I am very happy to be in the position I am in now. The season is not over. There are some very important tournaments coming up,” said the No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings. “So I hope I’m ready. One of my main objectives now is without a doubt the [Nitto ATP] End of the year finals in Turin.”
That ambition has allowed him to win six tour-level titles in 2024, including his first two, and reach world No. 1 for the first time in June. The 23-year-old right-hander is still confident that he has a lot of room for improvement to continue his rise.
“I have to improve a couple of things, which my coach and I already needed to improve on the tour of the United States,” said Sinner, who has won his last eleven games. “We work on that and also on physical fitness. We try to improve.”
For a period, a persistent hip injury affected his performance. Despite the limitations brought on by the injury, Sinner persevered and lifted a title in Cincinnati, with victories over Top 10 opponents such as Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev; He then prevailed in the American major for the first time in his career.
With his victory in New York, Sinner became the fourth man since 1988, when the Australian Open went hard-court, to win both majors on the surface in the same year, joining Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Mats Wilander. .
The 23-year-old’s service performance was key. Sinner won 87.5 percent (91/104) of service games at the US Open. But it shouldn’t be a surprise. Since September 2023, he has won 90.7 percent of service games, more than three percent higher than his mark of 87.5 percent in all of 2023.
What should be surprising is that Sinner is looking to further develop his confidence in that area. “We are working a lot on the service. We changed a couple things there,” Sinner said. “Obviously the movement I have now is slightly different and new, so I have to get used to it.”
Sinner is also looking to get closer to the net more often and find a style of play that incorporates a variety of shots.
The Italian’s next objective is the defense of his title at the China Open, which will begin on Wednesday against the Chilean Nicolás Jarry, who offers a great serve.
Did you know that…?
Sinner leads the Race to Turin with 4,305 points ahead of second place, Alexander Zverev. The Italian is trying to claim the year-end No. 1, an honor presented by PIF for the first time.
