The eight countries battling to become Davis Cup champions in 2024 have announced their teams for the Final 8 in Malaga, Spain, in November, with some of the world’s best tennis players set to represent their countries.
Spain will be looking to be strong at home and will have none other than Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal among the starters, who could repeat their epic doubles partnership from the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“Nadal told me he wanted to be in Malaga if we qualified. It was all very easy because he was the one who wanted to be in the finals from the beginning,” said captain David Ferrer.
Completing the Spanish team will be the experienced Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Carreno Busta and Marcel Granollers, who will face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals, with the Dutch team led by Tallon Griekspoor and Botic van de Zandschulp, the latter with a win against Alcaraz in New York this year. “There are still two months left and all the players who are on the list have to compete and see how they are. But the good thing is that there are many possibilities to combine doubles depending on physical exhaustion, how the tie goes, etc.”, he predicted.
Meanwhile, PIF ATP Rankings No. 1 Jannik Sinner will lead defending champions Italy, who will be looking to become the first country to successfully defend a Davis Cup title since the Czech Republic in 2012-13. They will also have Lorenzo Musetti and Flavio Cobolli as options in the singles.
For its part, Italy’s rival in the quarter-finals, Argentina, will repeat its full team, with Sebastián Báez, Francisco Cerúndolo and Tomás Etcheverry as singles players, giving captain Guillermo Coria multiple options in the singles matches. For the doubles, they will once again have the duo of Máximo González and Andres Molteni.
In the other tie at the top of the draw, the two most successful countries in Davis Cup history, the United States and Australia, will face each other. The Americans will have three Top 20 singles players – US Open runner-up Taylor Fritz along with Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton – while Australia is led by Montreal champion Alexei Popyrin.
Germany will face Canada, meanwhile, with the Germans seeking their fourth Davis Cup title led by Jan-Lennard Struff, while Canada has selected the same team that won the title in 2022, with Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov at the helm.
The Davis Cup quarter-finals will take place from Tuesday 19 to Thursday 21 November, the semi-finals from Friday 22 to Saturday 23 November and the 2024 Davis Cup final on Sunday 24 November.
