Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson completed their masterpiece, winning their first Grand Slam as a pair at the US Open with absolute authority. The Australians imposed their remarkable chemistry on the courts of Flushing Meadows, where they confirmed a reality in the men’s doubles locker room: they are one of the strongest pairs currently on the circuit.

The seventh seeds defeated Germans Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz 6-4, 7-6(4) to achieve the greatest feat of their careers. In a final that was extremely close until the end, the Oceanians resisted the pressure to achieve their objective. Impeccable on serve throughout the final, they suffered the only break when serving to close out the match. That incident, which ended up dragging them to the second set tie-break, did not cause them to panic before capturing the cup.

Above all, the Australians have completed a story of great internal strength at Grand Slam tournaments. After the painful defeat in the Wimbledon final in July, where they conceded after having three championship points, Purcell and Thompson joined forces in the Big Apple to write a completely different script.

“Being Grand Slam champions sounds fantastic,” Thompson said. “Especially after the disappointment of Wimbledon. We got a little nervous on match points at the end. But we stuck together and got it done.”

In their first full-time season as a duo, the Australians have extended a rapport they have demonstrated since the start of the year. Purcell and Thompson have become the duo with the most titles in 2024, adding the triumph in New York to those achieved in Dallas, Los Cabos and Houston.

Their victory at the US Open has also confirmed them as one of the most important pairings on the circuit today, competing for the biggest trophies on the calendar. The New York crown catapults them from No. 8 to No. 3 in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Rankings, cementing their chances of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin as a pair for the first time in their careers.

Purcell won the second Grand Slam in doubles of his sporting career. The Sydney native, who has played in the finals of majors With three different partners throughout his career, he conquered the grass of Wimbledon in 2022 alongside his compatriot Matthew Ebden.

Thompson has established himself as the player with the most doubles titles on the ATP Tour in the 2024 season. The Australian has a total of five trophies this year, adding the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid won with Sebastian Korda to the four trophies won as a partner with Purcell.

Krawietz and Puetz, meanwhile, leave New York having climbed one spot to No. 5 in the PIF ATP Live Doubles to Turin rankings. The Germans, who retained their ATP 500 title in Hamburg this year, were contesting their first Grand Slam final as a pair.
