Tsitsipas ends professional relationship with his father

The Greek lost in the second round in Montreal

Stefanos Tsitsipas announced on Friday that his father will no longer be a coach.

“I am sad to announce that the collaboration with my father as a coach has ended. I prefer my father to maintain his role as a father, and only as a father,” Tsitsipas wrote in Greek on social media.

“Philosophy teaches us that wisdom comes from understanding our limits and recognizing our mistakes,” he continued. “In my case, I have realized that it was a mistake to talk to my father the way I was doing. Tennis is not limited to one match, one shot or a performance lasting a few seconds. It is a long journey full of emotions, pressure and expectations.”

“In that moment of frustration, there were many wrongs towards my coach and father. Being an introvert, I tend to hold my emotions in and build them up until they reach a point of explosion. I consider myself a patient person, so I was impressed by their reaction.”

Tsitsipas lost the second round in Montreal to Nishikori and spoke candidly about his father’s role as coach after the match. Tsitsipas ended his father’s tenure in 2023 by hiring former world No. 8 Mark Philippoussis. He then split with the Australian two months later and resumed the routine with his father.

The Athens native has won 11 ATP Tour titles under Apostolos, including the Nitto ATP Finals in 2019. The No. 11 in the PIF ATP Rankings is 35-15 this season, highlighted by the ATP Masters 1000 trophy in Monte Carlo.
