Tomás Martín Etcheverry wants to be one of the main protagonists in the American hard court season. With a powerful game, perfect for launching an attack, the Argentine has the necessary weapons to make a difference in a part of the calendar reserved for the brave. At the Omnium Banque National, hosted by Rogers of Montreal, he accompanied the blows with a fundamental weapon: the confidence to suffer the unspeakable until reaching victory.

The No. 38 in the PIF ATP Rankings landed at the Canadian Masters 1000 with an epic victory, defeating Chilean Nicolás Jarry 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-2 in one of the most anticipated duels of the first round. With a direct approach on both sides of the net, drawing a match with just two breaks in the first two sets, the two great South American talents gave away a match without respite.

In that battle under the sun, where they kept their eyes on each other for nearly three hours of effort, the Argentine’s tenacity ended up making the difference on the road to victory. Etcheverry managed to build up a 4-0 lead at the start of the third set, a mountain big enough to dismantle his rival’s last options. Jarry, who punished the ball with 15 direct serves, found a wall ready to repel any reaction.

At 25, Etcheverry is looking to regain the form that led him to a career-best ranking of World No. 27 last February. The Argentine, who excelled on clay by reaching the semi-finals of the ATP 500 in Barcelona and the final of the ATP 250 in Lyon, is looking to build on that solid tennis on hard courts this week.

Now, Etcheverry will have a test of his conviction on the courts of Canada. The Argentine will face fifth seed Andrey Rublev in the second round of the tournament, one of the most experienced men in the main draw. It will be the first duel in the Lexus ATP Head2Head history between the two, prepared to offer a match with an absolute contrast of styles.

In a season of personal improvement at the top of the circuit, Etcheverry will try to string together wins for the first time in an ATP Masters 1000 tournament. A good test of continuity in one of the biggest events on the calendar.

Did you know…?
Four Argentine players have reached the final of the ATP Masters 1000 in Canada in the individual category. Since its introduction in the ATP Tour calendar in the 1978 season, figures such as José Luis Clerc (1978), Guillermo Cañas (2002), David Nalbandian (2003) and Juan Martín del Potro (2009) have managed to fight for the trophy in the tournament.
