Arthur Fils has shone this week at the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by NEOM. However, the top seed’s post-victory celebrations have been almost as eye-catching as his on-court exploits in Jeddah.
The 19-year-old has celebrated each of his three Green Group wins by performing Cristiano Ronaldo’s “Siu” celebration at King Abdullah Sports City. Fils is a long-time admirer of the Portuguese soccer star, who has been playing for Al Nassr, a Saudi Pro League team, since January.
“When I was young I was a big fan of Ronaldo,” Fils told ATPTour.com on Thursday, after maintaining his perfect record in the under-21 event by beating Dominic Stricker. “Now it’s a bit difficult to follow football [y a Ronaldo]especially when it’s here. I’m a big fan of him and I know he’s playing here in this country, so I’m very happy. [de hacerlo] when I win”.
The reference to Ronaldo’s connection with Saudi Arabia may have been obvious to many in the crowd as Fils celebrated. However, the Frenchman later revealed an ulterior motive for emulating the Portuguese football legend, who played for Real Madrid.
“My coach, Sergi [Bruguera]”He’s a big fan of Barcelona and Lionel Messi, so I wanted to drive him crazy,” Fils joked. “That’s why I do it, and I think I do it well.”
So, will Fils still release their version of the “Siu” for the 2024 season, even when playing outside of Saudi Arabia?
“Probably not, but [tal vez] sometimes,” he said. “Why not? I do not know when [exactamente] Sergi will be with me, but if I want to drive him crazy, I will definitely do it.”
