Before this summer, many fans may have identified Matteo Berrettini as a player with the potential to succeed on fast surfaces, both grass and hard, forgetting clay as a territory of success. But today, it is impossible for anyone to doubt his enormous talent on clay.

In two consecutive ATP 250 tournaments, he has shown that clay is a stage on which he is at his best. This Saturday he won the title at the Generali Open in Kitzbühel, a week after also winning at the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad.

Berrettini capped a great summer clay-court swing in the Kitzbühel final, defeating Frenchman Hugo Gaston 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 21 minutes. That makes it three crowns in 2024, something only Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have achieved this season.

Players with the most titles in 2024:
Jannik Sinner: 4 (Australian Open, Rotterdam, Miami and Halle)

Carlos Alcaraz: 3 (Indian Wells, Roland Garros and Wimbledon)

Matteo Berrettini: 3 (Marrakech, Gstaad and Kitzbühel)

The Italian has won all ten matches he has played on clay this July, bringing the number of titles under his belt to ten: Gstaad 2018, Budapest 2019, Belgrade 2021, Marrakech 2024, Gstaad 2024 and Kitzbühel 2024 make up his history of success on the surface.

However, this is not the first time that Berrettini has managed to score a full set of victories in two consecutive weeks. He already managed to do so in June 2022, this time on grass, at the Stuttgart (ATP 250) and Queen’s (ATP 500) tournaments.

A repeat of this will allow him to return to the Top 40 of the PIF ATP Rankings next Monday, which means a rise of more than 100 positions compared to the World No. 154 he occupied last March.

Berrettini became only the third player from his country to win in Kitzbühel, following in the footsteps of Adriano Panatta in 1975 and Paolo Lorenzi in 2016.

Erler and Mies win the doubles
No. 6 seeds Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies claimed the doubles crown, defeating No. 5 seeds Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens in the final.

It took the Austrian and German players one hour and 16 minutes to decide a tight final that ended in a super tie-break 6-3, 3-6, 10-6.

It is the first time that Erler, who already has six ATP Tour doubles titles, has won a trophy without teaming up with his compatriot Lucas Miedler. Mies also claimed his first title of the season – his seventh in total – and did so with a partner other than Kevin Krawietz.

Did you know…?

Matteo Berrettini has played four tournaments on clay this season, winning 15 of his 16 matches. He only recorded one defeat at the ATP Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo in April, against Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic. He collected the champion’s trophy in Marrakech, Gstaad and Kitzbühel.
