Players registered for the Mubadala Citi DC Open already know the path they must follow if they want to lift the championship trophy next Sunday, August 4.
The ATP 500 hard-court tournament that begins this Monday, July 29, will feature three Spaniards in the main draw with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina as the eighth seed, Roberto Carballés Baena as No. 11 and Roberto Bautista Agut.
Both Davidovich and Carballés will advance directly to the second round due to their status as favourites. The former will make his debut against a qualifier or the Italian Luca Nardi, while the latter will face the American Aleksandar Kovacevic or the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka.
Bautista, meanwhile, will not have an easy first round debut, as he faces wild card Denis Shapovalov. The Canadian dominates the Lexus ATP Head2Head by 1-0, winning the only previous encounter at Wimbledon 2021.
Shelton, Korda and Tiafoe among local favorites
Andrey Rublev will be the top seed in Washington for his fourth time at the tournament, while American Ben Shelton, No. 14 in the PIF ATP Rankings, will be the second seed.
Rublev is a two-time semi-finalist in Washington and could face Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-finals. The American, who made his professional debut ten years ago on this very stage, has reached the quarter-finals in the past two years before falling to the man who would go on to win the title – Daniel Evans and Nick Kyrgios respectively.
According to the ranking, fourth seed Sebastian Korda and seventh seed Jordan Thompson could meet in the quarter-finals, while third seed Karen Khachanov would be Davidovich’s hypothetical opponent in the same round.
Shelton, Korda and Tiafoe are three of five Americans who have received a first-round bye because of their seeding. The others are No. 13 Brandon Nakashima and No. 15 Alex Michelsen.
Did you know…?
There has not been a local champion at the Mubadala Citi DC Open since Andy Roddick lifted the title in 2007.
