The history of the Summer Olympic Games dates back to their inaugural edition in 1896. Although they were discontinued after 1924, gold medal competition returned to the sport in 1988.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games promise an exciting week of tennis, with the world’s best players battling it out for the most precious medal.

Here’s everything you need to know before the tournament:

What are the dates of the tennis tournament at the Games?
Tennis at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will begin on July 27, the day after the opening ceremony, and will run until August 4, when the final, including the men’s singles gold medal match, will be decided.

What is the schedule for Olympic tennis?
Following the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games on Friday 26 July, play will begin on Saturday 27 July with the men’s and women’s singles and men’s and women’s doubles. Matches will start each day at 12.00 pm.

The first medal match – for mixed doubles gold, silver and bronze, men’s bronze and women’s bronze – will be held on Friday, August 2. The men’s singles bronze match and the men’s doubles final will be held on Saturday, August 3, while the men’s singles gold medal match is reserved for Sunday, August 4.

What is the format of Olympic tennis in Paris? What size are the draws?
The Paris Olympics feature singles, doubles and mixed doubles draws, with the possibility for players to compete in multiple draws. The format is knockout, with 64 players in singles, 32 in men’s doubles and 16 pairs in mixed. Players who reach the semi-finals in their draws will enter the medal match and those who lose in the semi-finals will play the bronze match.

Which players will be at the Olympics?
The Olympic Games will feature the elite of the circuit. Although Italian Jannik Sinner, No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, is a last-minute withdrawal, there will be other stars such as recent Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, who will make his debut in the competition. The reigning Olympic gold medalist Alexander Zverev will try to win his second medal, while Serbian Novak Djokovic will bid for his first. Also in the spotlight will be the participation of two-time Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray, who announced his retirement from Paris 2024.

When is the drawing for the paintings?
Olympic tennis will have its draw on Thursday, July 25 at 11:00 am.

Which countries are participating in the Games?
The players represent 40 countries participating in the Olympic Games. Each country can nominate a maximum of four players per gender, as well as two doubles pairs per event, with a maximum of six players per gender for each country. In addition to the strong teams fielded by the United States, Spain and Italy, players from Egypt, Montenegro and Colombia will be competing at the Games. Lebanon will make its debut in the men’s singles with Benjamin Hassan.

How are players classified?
Qualification is based primarily on ranking, with the top-ranked players given priority to represent their country at the Games. The top 56 players (no more than four per country) automatically earn a spot if they wish to participate, with the remaining eight spots awarded to the winners or runners-up of the continental competitions in the Americas, Asia and Africa, as well as one universal spot reserved for Olympic or Grand Slam champions who have not qualified through other means.

Where is tennis played at the Games?
The matches will be held at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris, the usual venue for the French Grand Slam. The courts will feature the Roland Garros clay, a change from the hard courts used at Tokyo 2020.

Who won the Tokyo 2020 Games (held in 2021)?
Alexander Zverev won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Karen Khachanov in the final. Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic claimed gold with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 victory over compatriots Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Andrey Rublev claimed mixed doubles glory with a 6-3, 6-7(5), 13-11 victory over Elena Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev.
