Granollers and Zeballos return to CF at Wimbledon

The world No. 1s have been finalists in their two most recent appearances

Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos have enjoyed plenty of success together since they began playing together in 2019, but the Grand Slam crown has eluded the No. 1s in the PIF ATP Doubles Rankings.

At Wimbledon, where they have already contested two finals, they reached the quarter-finals on Monday, after defeating Sebastian Baez and Dustin Brown 6-3, 6-3 in 63 minutes.

The All England Club has witnessed the best tennis of the Spanish-Argentine pair, although both in 2021 (l. to Mektic/Pavic) and 2023 (l. to Koolhof/Skupski) they fell one step away from the title, losing in the final round.

The top seeds in London have won 12 of their last 14 matches and have made a strong showing as favourites for another year’s trophy, reaching the quarter-finals without dropping more than three games per set so far.

Granollers and Zeballos had not competed since they were semi-finalists at Roland Garros. A few weeks earlier they won the title at the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome, while in Indian Wells, Buenos Aires and Auckland they reached the final. In Miami, Monte Carlo and Madrid they reached the semi-finals.

In the Wimbledon quarterfinals, they will face the winning pair of the duel between German No. 8 seeds Kevin Krawietz and Tiem Puetz and American No. 12 seeds Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow.

Argentines Máximo González and Andrés Molteni also advanced to the quarterfinals of the British grass-court Grand Slam, beating locals Charles Broom and Arthur Fery 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-5 in two hours and 24 minutes.

Gonzalez and Molteni, who are the tournament’s No. 11 seeds, have won two titles this season in Cordoba and Barcelona (both on clay). They will now face Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson for a place in the semifinals.

The Australians, seeded No. 15, defeated Andreas Mies and John-Patrick Smith by a resounding 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 26 minutes on Monday.

For his part, Salvadoran Marcelo Arévalo, who plays alongside Mate Pavic as No. 4 seeds, advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals against Frenchmen Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul by 6-4, 7-6(1) in one hour and 27 minutes.

The next challenge for Arévalo and Pavic will be the pairing of Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten.
