Roberto Bautista Agut had to postpone his vacation, but he did so happily, for a good reason, the result of something unique. It was in 2019, when the Spaniard reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon, where he ended up losing to Novak Djokovic.

“I had planned to be in Ibiza right now,” said the Spaniard, who was at the time experiencing his best days as a professional. “Everything was organised. I have six of my friends there but I prefer to be here. I think they will fly to London on Friday to watch the semi-final.”

This Friday, Bautista Agut will play the third round against Fabio Fognini (3-7 in the Lexus ATP Head2Head), although he will actually taste much better. After fighting to find himself again, the Spaniard will once again fight for a place in the round of 16 of a Grand Slam (for the first time since the Australian Open in 2023).

Bautista Agut, outside the Top 100 of the PIF ATP Rankings, has found his feet again at this edition of Wimbledon with a good version that has helped him overcome the first two rounds of the tournament by defeating Maximilian Marterer and Lorenzo Sonego, before meeting Fognini on court 16.

The Spaniard, who just a few days ago showed signs of improvement by reaching the quarter-finals in Mallorca, losing to Gael Monfils, faces the challenge of breaking through to the top at the age of 36. Having reached world No. 9 in 2019, and with 11 ATP Tour titles to his name, including two crowns in Doha (2019 and 2022), as well as the final at the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai in the 2016 season.

Thus, after going through a difficult period, Bautista Agut once again sees his tennis flourish on grass, a special surface on which he achieved his best result in a Grand Slam: the Wimbledon semi-finals, a lifelong memory that is now a source of motivation.
