The 2024 edition of Wimbledon is now underway, with stars such as reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz, seven-time trophy winner Novak Djokovic and PIF ATP Rankings World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the second round on the London grass.
ATPTour.com looks at five things to watch in the coming fortnight.
1) Can Sinner assert himself and extend his reign as No. 1?
The Italian has yet to win Wimbledon but will be looking to add this historic trophy to his collection. Sinner, who won his first-round match against Yannick Hanfmann in four sets, reached the semi-finals last year at SW19 and arrives in fresh form, having claimed his first crown on grass in Halle. He will face compatriot and 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini in the second round. With Alcaraz having to defend 2,000 points and Djokovic 1,200, Sinner has the chance to extend his reign on the circuit as World No. 1, as he “only” has to safeguard 720 points.
2) Djokovic puts himself to the test: There were many doubts about whether Djokovic would be able to compete at the All England Club after his meniscus tear. Not only did he look in fine form in his opening match against Vit Kopriva, he dropped just five games. The 24-time Grand Slam champion has routinely shown his ability to find his best form on the biggest stage and Wimbledon has been no different. The Serbian has a 93-11 record at the tournament and is bidding for his eighth title.

3) Alcaraz’s state of grace: The Spanish star is coming off his third Grand Slam title at Roland Garros. Alcaraz also starts as the reigning champion at SW19, where he defeated Djokovic in an epic five-set final last year. He is still relatively new on grass, but has a record of 18-3 on the surface and will try to win his fourth major in this edition.
4) Murray goes for doubles: It was a tough time for Andy Murray when he withdrew from the singles at Wimbledon on Tuesday. However, he remains registered for the doubles, where he will play with his brother Jamie Murray, former No. 1 in the PIF ATP Doubles Rankings. It is the first time the brothers will play together in a Grand Slam. The top favourites are Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.
Andy Murray has also accepted a wild card to play the mixed doubles with Emma Raducanu.
5) First moments to remember: Several up-and-coming players have already made their mark on the British grass this year. Lucky loser Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard racked up 51 aces in a memorable performance against Sebastian Korda, while #NextGenATP Shang Juncheng became the first Chinese player in the Open Era to win a main draw match at Wimbledon. He is still just 19. Meanwhile, Otto Virtanen, who had never played a Grand Slam final draw before, went home to attend his grandfather’s funeral before returning to Wimbledon and reaching the second round.
