Alejandro Tabilo’s name has earned a special place in the history of professional tennis. The South American completed a great feat by becoming champion this Saturday of the Mallorca Championships, becoming the first Chilean tennis player capable of lifting a trophy on grass in the Open Era. With a week of splendor on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, on the eve of a Wimbledon where he wants to be the protagonist, he expressed a talent that finds no limits on any surface.

The No. 24 in the PIF ATP Rankings captured a restrained final on the Balearic grass, defeating Austrian Sebastian Ofner 6-3, 6-4 to claim the second ATP Tour title of his career. The Chilean, who opened his career in Auckland during the first week of the 2024 season, has maintained full intensity to make his way to the top of the locker room. With 86% success with his first serve, the South American managed to turn a final in which he never gave up a serve.

“It has been incredible. I nevertheless can not believe that. I’m trying to process everything that’s happening this season. Especially reaching the Top 20 is something incredible for me. Every day is like a dream come true. “A lot of new things are happening to me.”

Tabillo has completed a sensational week on the grass of Mallorca, adjusting to the surface conditions immediately. The Chilean, who had adjusted his pace by playing in the Queen’s tournament the previous week, barely gave up a set on the way to the trophy on the Balearic island. Figures such as Alexander Shevchenko, Jakub Mensik and Gael Monfils fell into his hands before dealing the final blow on the way to the cup.

The victory on the grass of Mallorca strengthens Tabilo’s weight in the locker room. The Chilean will enter the world Top 20 for the first time in his career, occupying No. 19 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings since Monday. After surpassing his compatriot Nicolás Jarry, Tabilo will become the second South American racket on the ATP Tour, only behind the Argentine Sebastián Báez.

“It is something impressive for our country. It is very important, the main objective is to motivate new generations to continue playing. And show them that it is possible to get here. I hope we can have many players on the circuit.”

Did you know…?
Alejandro Tabilo is the sixth man to lift individual trophies on multiple surfaces in the 2024 season. The Chilean, champion on hard court and grass this year, follows in the footsteps of figures such as Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Andrey Rublev, Alex de Miñaur and Tommy Paul.
