Sinner: “I have no doubts about my body”

The Italian reflects on his form ahead of the grass-court Grand Slam

Before Roland Garros, there were doubts about Jannik Sinner’s hip injury. The Italian made it clear on Saturday, before Wimbledon, that there are no such doubts ahead of the Major on grass.

“After Paris I took a few days off and then I went back to work. There are no secrets. I feel physically much better than at the beginning of Roland Garros because I arrived there with some doubts,” said Sinner. “Here I have no doubts about my body. We have worked a lot in the last few days.”

“I’m not worried about my body shape. I’m just happy to be here and I hope to be ready to compete.”

The 22-year-old, the first player from his country to reach No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, is the top seed at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. He arrives in London high on confidence after claiming his first title on grass at the ATP 500 in Halle.

“Obviously last week was important for me. I reached the semi-finals here last year, so I know I can play good tennis on this surface. Obviously, every year it’s a little bit different. In Halle the conditions are different than here,” Sinner said. “I’m just trying to get used to it, to gain confidence on this court. That’s all. Thinking about being the top seed or anything else is pointless. Everyone wants to win and show their best here.”

There was a lot of chatter when Sinner stepped out onto Centre Court to practice with seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, who had knee surgery after Roland Garros. “We were there for only 45 minutes playing points. It’s also hard to understand what level he’s at,” Sinner said. “But for sure he’s one of the greatest to have played on this court. So for me, he’s one of the best.” [fue] a great privilege and honor to practice with him.”

Djokovic was featured in a documentary about the end of Roger Federer’s career, FEDERER: Twelve Final Days, which was just released. Sinner took note of how Federer, Djokovic and Rafael Nadal pushed each other in competition. Sinner’s Lexus ATP Head2Head rivalry with Carlos Alcaraz has become one of the most interesting matchups in the sport.

“At some point Rafa came, then Roger was struggling. Then he tried to find a way to beat him, and then Novak came,” Sinner said. “I think that is something that makes the player evolve and also increases the level of each one of them. They have reached one hundred percent of everything. That would also be my dream, to reach the point at the end of the career where I reached the 100 percent of my physical ability in tennis and also [el] [lado] mental”.

“I think that’s been the most impressive thing they’ve done.”

Now Sinner is fully focused on Wimbledon, where he will try to win his second Grand Slam after his triumph at the Australian Open earlier this season. Last year, the Italian reached the semi-finals at SW19.

“I’m very happy to be back here. A very, very special tournament is coming up,” Sinner said. “Obviously I’m happy with how I played last week. I’m trying to find some good form here on these courts, hopefully I’ll be ready for this tournament.”
