Ben Shelton tried the typical Mallorcan ensaimada before his debut.

Ben Shelton will start the Mallorca Championships presented by waterdrop as the top seed. But before making his debut at the ATP 250 on grass, the American tried some of the traditional products on the island.
Pa amb oli (bread with oil), sobrasada – the typical Mallorcan sausage -, local cheeses or the famous ensaimada have been the typical dishes of the land that the No. 14 of the PIF ATP Rankings savored in his first days in the Balearic tournament.
“Mallorca is a beautiful place and I really enjoyed it here last year. It wasn’t the result I wanted [perder en primera ronda]”But I hope to go further this year,” said the American, who is participating for the second time.
Shelton, who is exempt from playing the first round due to his status as the main favorite, will debut in this edition against Rinky Hijikata. The Australian managed to beat the Italian Luca Nardi 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 in his debut.
After a few days of training at the Mallorca Country Club, he admits that he feels very comfortable in Calvià. “I really like the way you can play on these courts. Also, this is one of the most beautiful cities where we have a tournament on the circuit. I’m excited to return and play on the island.”
“I think it’s great preparation for Wimbledon. The weather in London right now is not as good as here, so it’s nice to come and see the sun for a few days, plus the warm weather and prepare in a cozy place like this,” Shelton commented.
Of course, Shelton does not give much importance to his status as a favorite at 21 years old. “I’m still getting used to playing on grass and trying to figure out how to play on grass. Even though I’m seeded first, I don’t have a lot of pressure or high expectations on myself.”
“I’m really looking forward to seeing what I can do this year,” he added. “Last year I lost to Christopher Eubanks and he ended up winning the tournament. I’m really happy for him because he’s one of my best friends. I know he loves playing here. , so I’m looking forward to competing this week.”
It is not possible to predict what destiny will bring him this week in Mallorca, but he is enjoying all the benefits of the island in his first days.
