Sinner extends an immense year by crowning Halle

Jannik accumulates 14 individual titles on the circuit

Jannik Sinner continues to write a new era at the top of the ATP Tour. The Italian won the 14th individual title of his career this Sunday at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, lifting a trophy on grass for the first time. At 22 years old, and with a temperament worthy of a great veteran, he has debuted his status as world No. 1 by putting on the champion’s suit, demonstrating an innate ability to walk as a man to beat in the locker room.

The first seed assumed his stripes to culminate a magical week on the German grass, defeating former champion Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(8), 7-6(2) in one of the most intense clashes of the tournament. The Italian, who did not deliver his serve in the last two rounds of the tournament, once again passed an exercise of total concentration to lift a trophy of enormous weight. If the conquest of grass is a symptom of absolute dominance on the circuit, Jannik took a step forward before the eyes of all his opponents.

“It means a lot to me. It was a tough game against Hubi,” Sinner said. “I knew I needed to serve really well, holding on to the really important points in each set. I am satisfied, I tried to play the best tennis possible in those moments. I feel happy for this tournament as it is the first one I have won on a grass court. The feeling is great.”
