Laura Siegemund and Edouard Roger-Vasselin are the first champions in any modality at Roland Garros 2024. In this case, the German and the Frenchman won the crown this Thursday in the mixed doubles.
Starting as No. 2 seeds, they defeated No. 4 favorites Desiare Krawczyk and Neal Skupski in the final by 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 40 minutes, in the duel that opened the day at the Philippe Stadium Chatrier.
With two hours left before the modality closed the registration period, Roger-Vasselin had no one to play with and asked Siegemund if he wanted to form a team. The German accepted and the outcome could not have been better. In their first participation together, they lifted the title.
Roger-Vasselin and Siegemund took over from the Japanese Miyu Kato and the German Tim Puetz, who had been the last champions in Paris.
“It was a last minute thing,” Siegemund explained at the trophy ceremony at the Philippe Chatrier. “I didn’t want to play mixed here, because I was in singles and doubles too. Then Edouard wrote to me about two hours before the deadline closed.”
“I had always wanted to play with him and, for whatever reason, it didn’t happen, so I couldn’t say no, now that he is finally free. So I think it was a good decision to sign up. Thank you very much for playing with me. I had already enjoyed the mixed one before, but it was special, I enjoyed it a lot,” he explained.
“Thanks to you Laura for accepting my last-minute request,” replied local favorite Roger-Vasselin. “Two hours before closing, I didn’t have a partner, and you said yes. I’m glad it turned out that way and we had a great week, so thanks to you and your team too.”
They had a peaceful debut against guests Alize Cornet and Nicolas Mahut (6-1, 6-3). But from then on they had to work hard to reach the final, since in all their matches they needed to resolve it in the decisive super tie-break against Shibahara/Lammons, Routliffe/Venus and Eikeri/González.
In the last round they found their best level, with 79% of points won with first serves and four breaks converted in 10 opportunities, to take the victory in two sets.
For Roger-Vasselin it is the first title in the modality, after at the 2022 US Open he fell short in the final along with Kirsten Flipkens (l. with Sanders/Peers). Of course, the Frenchman had already won at home in the men’s doubles in 2014 with Julien Benneteau (d. Granollers/López).
For his part, Siegemund celebrated his second trophy in the mixed doubles. He already knew what it was like to win this event at the 2016 US Open with Mate Pavic (d. Vandeweghe / Ram).
