Carlos Alcaraz can’t wait to face Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of Roland Garros, something that will happen next Friday.
The pair of rivals, who have their Lexus ATP Head2Head series tied (4-4), will face each other in a highly anticipated fight with the reward of the first final of the second major of the year for either of them, whoever wins.
“I’m really looking forward to playing that match,” said the No. 3 in the PIF ATP Rankings. “I think it will be a very nice meeting and one that we will enjoy. It helps me to see how my level and my confidence are. “We are going to try to do everything possible to put him in trouble and try to win.”
Before the match, Alcaraz reviewed three of his past encounters with Sinner.
3) Indian Wells, semifinals, Alcaraz v. to Sinner 1-6, 6-3, 6-2
“The Indian Wells semifinals helped me try to find solutions,” explained Alcaraz about the only match that both have played so far this season, and which the Murcian won after coming back in the first set against an opponent who was undefeated until that moment in the year (15-0). “In the end, Jannik is one of the players who always keeps you at a very high level and you have to try to find solutions in the match as it comes. I think that is the beauty of tennis and what we will try to do on Friday at Roland Garros.”
2) Wimbledon, R16, Sinner v. and Alcaraz 6-1, 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3
“It was a very complicated match for me,” the Spaniard recalled about that match in the third Grand Slam of the season. “The first time at the Wimbledon center… I was a little nervous, but in the end we both ended up playing great tennis, showing a very high level. I have to say that in my matches against Jannik I have learned each time to play him, to deal with the different situations that can arise in front of him,” acknowledged the Spaniard.
1) US Open, quarterfinals, Alcaraz v. to Sinner 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-7(0), 7-5, 6-3
“At the US Open… What am I going to say about the US Open match?” the 21-year-old asked himself about the five-set battle they both had in New York. “In the end, I played for 5 hours and 15 minutes at a very high level and with very high demands: physically, mentally and tennis-wise. I think it is one of the best matches I have played in my entire career, without a doubt,” said Alcaraz, who ended up winning his first major in that US Open, in addition to becoming the youngest No. 1 in the history of the PIF ATP Rankings.
