Jarry secures two Chileans in CF de Roma

He joins Tabilo among the top eight at the Foro Italico

Nicolás Jarry had a unique opportunity to appear in the quarterfinals of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia this Tuesday and he did not waste it to join his compatriot Alejandro Tabilo among the best eight in Rome. It is the first time that there will be two Chileans in this round in an ATP Masters 1000.

The No. 21 seed resolved his match against French qualifier Alexandre Muller 7-5, 6-3, earning his ticket to the quarterfinals in one hour and 34 minutes. It is the third time that he has made it this far in a tournament of this category.

“I’m very happy with how I played, with how I was, it was one of the best games in a long time,” he acknowledged in the interview on the court. “I’m happy with how I played, my mood is reflecting everything I’ve worked on, so it’s more motivating to continue down this path. I needed to go through certain personal battles, I am very happy and now, let’s celebrate it.”

The tall two-meter Chilean reached the quarterfinals of an ATP Masters 1000 for the third time in his career and, curiously, it is the first time on clay. He had previously achieved it in Shanghai 2023 (l. with Dimitrov) and Miami 2024 (l. with Medvedev).

Furthermore, at the Foro Itálico he became the third player from his country, along with his compatriot Cristian Garín, who has reached the quarterfinals of an ATP Masters 1000 the most times, only surpassed by Marcelo Ríos (19) and Fernando González ( 13).

Jarry managed to turn around his record of wins and losses in tournaments of this category this week in Rome, presenting a record of 17-16, after beating the Frenchman in the fourth round. Previously, this week he had also defeated two local players such as Matteo Arnaldi (R64) and Stefano Napolitano (R32).

The first duel in the Lexus ATP Head2Head against Muller went to the side of the more experienced player. Of course, the Chilean and the Frenchman had already met on the ATP Challenger Tour. Specifically, in Aix-en-Provence (France) in 2022, also on clay and with the same winning sign.

On the Italian clay, Muller tried to change history and surprised Jarry from the start. Although the No. 24 in the PIF ATP Rankings had up to four options in the second game of the match to break his rival’s serve, he was the Frenchman who was the first to do so (1-2). However, Jarry reacted immediately to put the service shift in order. When everything seemed decided to be resolved in the tie-break, the Chilean found a new break in the twelfth game to close the initial set 7-5.

From then on, he found the timing of the game and commanded from start to finish. He took the initiative in the game and on the scoreboard, thanks to a 3-0 run that was too heavy a barrier for Muller, who had no room to recover.

Jarry will face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals, who has just beaten Álex de Miñaur 6-1, 6-2 in just 60 minutes of play. The Greek played the best tennis of the week to leave his record with the Australian at 11-1 (Lexus ATP HeadToHead), and to achieve his 5th qualification to the quarterfinals in Rome (and fourth in a row).

On Thursday he will clash for the sixth time with Jarry, who leads the Lexus ATP HeadToHead 3-2 between them. The Chilean also won the most recent match (Beijing 2023), but the world No. 8 was left with the only matchup on clay (Monte Carlo 2023).
