It had never happened before. Chilean tennis will have two representatives in the quarterfinals of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, thanks to Nicolás Jarry and Alejandro Tabilo who ensured their presence among the eight best in Rome this Tuesday.
Furthermore, these victories guarantee that next Monday the PIF ATP Rankings will have two players in the world Top 30, with Jarry currently occupying virtual No. 22 and Tabilo at No. 28.
“For all of Chilean tennis, it is great that we are all moving up,” Jarry said about his country’s brand at the Foro Italico. “Christian [Garín] has already been in these circumstances [llegó a ser No. 17 del mundo]”Tabilo has a level and I hope we can all continue to rise, because it is important for the entire country.”
Tabilo and Jarry join Garín himself, Fernando González, Nicolás Massú and Marcelo Ríos – the only Chilean champion in Rome in 1998 – as the six players capable of advancing to the quarterfinals in this ATP Masters 1000 (Open Era).
“I am very happy with my performance and happy for him [Tabilo]”added Jarry. “It is his first time in this round, he is playing incredible, he has been winning many games, with a lot of confidence and he is very dangerous when he is like this. Congratulations to him for all the work he has done.”
The truth is that Tabilo appears in the quarterfinals in Rome, after an unforgettable week in which he has knocked down prestigious rivals such as world No. 1 Novak Djokovic or former No. 8 Karen Khachanov.
For his part, Jarry, who has already made three appearances in the quarterfinals of an ATP Masters 1000 – like Garín – has managed to defend his status as the No. 21 favorite on Italian clay against Matteo Arnaldi, Stefano Napolitano and Alexandre Muller.
“Each game has been very different from the other,” he began his analysis of his path in Rome so far. “In the first one I started playing very well and ended up withstanding the pressure, in the second I didn’t feel good at all but I was able to get through it, and today [el martes] I started well and I stayed there.”
“I want to continue like today, I was very calm, trying to be very aggressive when it mattered,” he concluded about his performance in the fourth round. For now, he will have a day of rest to try to continue making history for his country in Rome.
