Nicolás Jarry had had a brilliant start to the season, which allowed him to rise to the highest position of his career as No. 18 in the PIF ATP Rankings, however, last March he suffered a sudden stop to his evolution that took him to record four defeats in a row.
That streak of adverse results came to an end this Saturday in his debut at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, where he had to defeat the local Matteo Arnaldi in the Grand Stand Arena 6-2, 7-6(6), in two hours and six minutes.
The Chilean extended his lead in the Lexus ATP Head2Head to 3-0. And in the two previous matches, victory had also fallen on his side both in Beijing 2023 (he saved 3 match points) and in Adelaide this season (he escaped from 1MP).
This time it was no less tough, although it was the first time he knocked down Arnaldi in two sets. The Italian, who knew how to recover from a great initial set by the Chilean, found the necessary support in the audience to get hooked on the match.
Jarry had to grit his teeth and pull his heart out to cling to his chances of victory. At 4-5 he had to turn around three set points against him, while in the tie-break he raised another four more, when he lost 2-6.
The No. 21 seed inaugurated his record of victories at the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome, where he had previously participated twice (2018 and 2023) without having been able to debut until this year.
Jarry will face local guest Stefano Napolitano in the third round at the Foro Italico, who came back from lucky loser Juncheng Shang 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-0 in two hours and 19 minutes.

Nicolás Jarry added victory No. 15 of his career at the ATP Masters 1000, where he has played a total of 31 matches.
