Carlos Alcaraz will not compete in the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, as confirmed this Friday by the player through social networks. The Murcian, who reached the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrid Open this week, has suffered from the muscle injury suffered at the beginning of the month in his right arm, an ailment that has already prevented him from participating in the Monte Carlo and Barcelona tournaments.
“I felt pain after playing in Madrid, discomfort in my arm. Today I had some tests and I have muscle edema in the pronator teres, a consequence of my last injury. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to play in Rome. “I need rest to recover and be able to play 100% pain-free.”
The Spaniard competed in the Caja Mágica with a compression bandage on his right arm, dosing the force in his drive stroke in each match. Despite the limitations, with prudence as a guide and the main objective of not getting hurt, Alcaraz overcame three matches before losing to Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid.
Last season, Alcaraz made the first participation of his career on the clay of the Foro Italico in Rome. In an intense European clay court season, where he chained the titles in Barcelona and Madrid, the Murcian lost in the third round of the tournament against the Hungarian Fabian Marozsan.
Alcaraz currently occupies No. 5 in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin (1,900 points) after a start to the 2024 season in which, among other results, he managed to reach the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and retain the BNP crown Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
The next event scheduled on the Murcian’s calendar is Roland Garros, where he climbed to the semifinals in the last edition of the tournament. The main draw of the Parisian Grand Slam starts on Sunday, May 26.
The Internazionali BNL d’Italia takes place from May 8 to 19 at the Foro Italico in Rome. Daniil Medvedev is the current champion of the tournament.
